New journal output from our Division of Digital Strategy and Innovation Learning Research Center, on using Artificial Intelligence in online discussion boards. AI relieves instructors of automatable tasks, e.g., low-stakes grading and post moderation, freeing up time for human-driven interventions such as providing feedback, which this study indicates being impactful for students’ writing skills. AI is particularly impactful in high-enrollment classes, where a traditional discussion forum is less scalable. Post-AI, instructor coaching positively impacts student curiosity and word count.
